About the Event

In Embracing Emancipation: A Transatlantic History of Irish Americans, Slavery, and the American Union, 1840-1865, Dr. Ian Delahanty uncovers how Irish immigrants' backgrounds in and connections to Ireland influenced their involvement in the debate over the future of American slavery.  In his talk, Dr. Delahanty will summarize key findings from his book, focusing especially on how a critical mass of Irish Americans embraced the cause of Black freedom during the Civil War. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
